Bella Job. I've always been able to find things to Ramble in teachings of Romanization forms of Japanese but not something to help with the entire thing. I have read probably 10 pages of your book, the introduction. It's well placed together. I'm glad you're back and going to update! I enjoy your site greatly. and I am amazed by your coding skills since I am a begginer/amateur HTMList. Keep it up, Suggestion for income ; your book to be published when it's complete, even if it is, Version one or part one. I read many Ethnographies for IB Anthropology that had a later revised version when it was finished with more insight. Wow, I apologize this is long. I'd be amazed if you read this =[. I recommend getting ads to help with your page though, I would still come if it had a header or footer ad or twenty. This page is the only page that is actually creditable and not .. poorly done. You Rock my Socks! Have a wonderful day and I hope you and your sweetheart maybe united soon [ ish not allowed to insert a carat three heart symbol here so states she is not allowed to and rambles on with that D: ].

I am trying to learn the Osaka-ben; to me--it sounds very nice. I stumbled around and finally found a great site. I will check more. A very good site with a variant size of information for foreigners; very neatly developed. Other thoughts: There are some miswritten characters, but I guess that does not really matter. (If you want to know what characters may have been misspelled, you can contact me: ninjinsamax3@hotmail.co.jp; and I will scan the site some more.) Other than this, I think I have learned a lot of words; I really like that word list.

I am SO pleased that you fixed the way the main dictionary pane would get displaced underneath the left menu-bar if the window was small. That was getting SO annoying. Now it is perfect again. Thanks, champ. I really like the present colour-scheme too. - Nice one. By the way, thanks for making and maintaining an excellent site.

I had to do a bit of maintainance on the site which ended in reuploading all the content. Smart as I am, I completely forgot to copy over the most recent feedback page before updating. So, three or four messages have been lost due the update (go me...) Feel free to rewrite them >.>;;

The site is great but one thing is missed - in Firefox 2 there is an error in stylesheet, since the menu on the left does not "float" (stick) at the left side of the page content, so page looks "quite" ugly. Please fix it :) Other is good for me. Thx for your work! From Russia ;)

I want to say that i love this site! I have only recently (like about a week ago hehe) started to want to learn japanese seriously. his is the best site i have come across so far. I learnt the whole hiragana in two hours! lol yeah. busy with lesson one now. Hard to find the time for it what with school (i'm 15) but i really hope i can learn a lot from this site.

Dan, while that seems a good idea, it actually doesn't help a great deal since you still need to know them in order to read them - street signs don't adhere to the same frequency distribution as newspapers, which is what kanji frequency lists are generated off of. Instead, I'm looking into getting an ordering that will at least be "intuitive" up for the jouyou kanji soon (depending on whether I can get a certain authors permission to use said ordering)

Really cool site! Well organised, fast, tidy and even a little witticism which makes learning all the more fun...thanks! Just one suggestion which is a bit of a pain, but....what I've always thought would be good is a list of kanji in order of frequency of useage. That way one can pick up on a little more Japanese when wandering around the streets of Japan. Bit of a mammoth task perhaps...

I have already come to the end of lesson three, and it´s amazing how much I´ve learned. I have a big use for this site, and the lessons.. Without them, I would never learn any of this in such an effective way! No sites on the net give such good information on Japanese learning like this one. Great site!

hi, I really like the part where you find out how to pronounce the kanji by moving the mouse. I usually don't remember kanji because I glance straight to the hiragana written in the text book, lol. I always failed to take it seriously when it comes to self study - this time I didn't. Well, at least I feel so. Thanks for this great site!

Great job on the lessons. I started wanting to learn Japanese after having watched tonnes of anime. However, after doing a few exercises in the Rosetta Stone Japanese software, I quickly realized that it was lacking a level of seriousness only found by taking formal classes. Luckily, I found your lessons first. Keep up the good work! Ricky from Canada

Hello, I'd like to clear something up. That is, the っ, I believe, does not equal a glottal stop. The glottal stop is a disctinct sound defined in the IPA alphabet as ʔ. The glottal stop is the sound produced by pressing the vocal cords together after which they are released. The result is the sound between the e and a as in the Dutch beamen [bəʔamə] or English [ʔmʔm] (with the first tone higher than the second) meaning something like 'uh uh, that's no good'. The glottal stop does actually occur in Japanese. I believe it does right before articulating a vowel at the beginning of a word, and at the end of words with single vowels (i.e. 文書). This obviously differs from the っ used in Japanese; as that is merely an indication for a lengthened consonant (IPA: ː) and has in fact very little to do with a glottal stop. Apart from that, nice site, I especially like the lessons as they provide a good introduction to basic Japanese grammar.

A feedback page is for leaving your comments on the site, not for asking questions concerning Japanese.

Brian, your message is better asked in the forum instead of on a feedback page, but to answer your question: the hiragana ゐ and ゑ, and their katakana counterparts ヰ and ヱ are the symbols for "wi" and "we", which are not used in modern Japanese. ゝ, ゞ, ヽ and ヾ are repeater symbols for a hiragana, voiced hiragana, katakana and voiced katakana syllable respectively. Should you have more questions in relation to this, please start a thread in the forum ^_^

This is brilliant. It's well documented, covers all the aspects including writing (plus I can't study Japanese when it's all romanized) and I particularly love that there's a section on Kansai/Oosaka-ben. The only thing that I'm not in love with is not being able to print easily from the website. Having that functionality (for the wordlists and Kanji lists in particular) would be great. Other than that, this is ideal.

The Best Japanese learning site I have ever found! Finally, somebody properly explains Kanji writing and learning (always had Kanji from here and there), but this site is so organized, which I think is the key (at least for me). Cannot wait to have the rest of the lessons, kanji-s etc. uploaded. :) Cheers, R.

I have no idea =) から marks starting point, まで marks extent, so there is no other way to interpret the sentence as containing "from Stockholm" and "up to Helsinki", even if we were to swap things around like ヘルシンキまでストックホルムから行きました or even で行きました。ヘルシンキま。ストックホルムから。

Hi, Your particle dictionary ttp://nihongoresources.com/downloads/pdict/pdict.xml does not render properly in konqueror due to konqueror assuming the CSS file (pdict.css) is in ISO-8859-1, which causes problems when rendering the CSS content directives. I'd suggest adding a htaccess rule in ttp://nihongoresources.com/downloads/pdict/ to set the proper character set: AddCharset UTF-8 .css

all my computers except my laptop all kaput, and the laptop is nothing to sing home about either. Except more status quo while I try to find a way to revive everything... I enjoy the noise of no computers humming, but it is severely impairing my work, and making me quite poor in buying new components to repair and update everything so it won't break in the next two months if it hasn't broken now... a replacement laptop for this almost dead old one alone's set me back 1150 euro -_- there was a bug in the feedback page too (explains why there was no feedback since january) which I fixed.

An auspicious start to the New Year (here now and also for all who read this). I come by way of Wiki' and the work of Mr. Jim Breen of Monash University. This is a very inviting and pleasant website you present to the world. A quibble so minor as to be almost beneath notice, but I would write `til rather than till (your .."break till January".. ah, but it is January now!) - I imagine that I am somewhat old-fashioned in my useage and think of till as more to do with turning the earth or a lesser compartment in a greater than as a contraction for until the time. Grace, Joy and Chance be with all in `07.

Ok, so first: I'm German. And you should know, that in Germany it's not at all usual to study Nihongo in college, because this subject does not really exist in our schools. I took some Nihongo lessons (for a lot of money) in an association, but that's, like I said, rather expensive and in the end my teacher finished her studies in Germany and she went back to Japan. So my Nihongo is a rather sophisticated thing: I am able to use simple grammar rules and to have relly simple conversations, but I know the conjugation rules too, just not really entirely! But I think your site will help me to fill the gaps and to continue my studies! I'm really addicted to Japan and all that, so thank you for this great page!

I really miss the names dictionary which was the thing that I used the most here and it doesn't seem to be up yet. I just wanted to say that I find this site to be by far one of the most useful on the entire internet, for me anyway. The design is fantastic, for one. Clean, clear and very much uncluttered. But the lessons are where it really shines. Your writing explains things very concisely, even the occasional tangents on classical Japanese (which you always, eventually, make a point with). I took five semesters of Japanese in college, although being bad at languages coupled with meeting only twice a week and not being able to study much at all (as it was irrelevant to my ACTUAL major) means I learned little. What few things I have retained are thanks to constant exposure, with anime and manga being my primary hobbies. Above all they let me maintain my katakana/hiragana reading and a smidge of vocab, although I know almost no kanji, and have forgotten most grammar. So, I skimmed lesson 0, played with the great practice test you include to brush up, and am currently getting into lesson one. You teach verbs in a way quite different from how I learned them (we used Nakama). It's a lot of tough information at first, but once I got down the verb moods to the point where I can tell which it is and what ending it takes just by seeing the kanji for the mood, it's gotten a lot better. Anyway, enough from me, but I do hope the other lessons all come up soon! I'm not in a rush because I'm still just doing this on my free time, as I'm a full time grad student in something that has nothing to do with Japanese, but I look forward to seeing where the lessons take me. Absolutely wonderful site, and a great service to everyone on the internet who even somewhat interested in Japanese. You should be proud of what you've created.

I loved lessons 0 and 1. I've taken Nihongo in a class setting a few years ago, and have been doing a lot of research on the subject lately, and your site is by far the best I've visitted, because you explain things very thoroughly.
